Gardening: Planting My First Tree
Planting your first tree is not always as pleasant an experience as you may want it to be. Often we do not know exactly how to plant our tree and then the result may be some embarrassment. To avoid that I thought I give you this article. Nobody can be an expert from the word go and we have to accept it that we all make mistakes that sometimes stay with us for years afterwards. Unfortunately, though, some of us make bigger mistakes than others. I know I have really made a mistake with the first tree I planted.
Here is the story:
In my mind I had the perfect spot for my tree. There was lots of space between my house and my fence probably as much as five feet. This was an area in the garden that was not used a lot and I thought that if I provided the area with some lovely shade, it would become more used by my family. I had dreams of a lovely shaded area where an outdoor table can be placed and where the family can have picnic lunches in summer. I was very wrong to say the least.
My choice fell on an apple tree. Ignoring the risk of apples falling on our heads, I had the idea that it would be relaxing and fun to sit under the shade and eat our own delicious home grown apples. The idea drove me off to the nursery. I didn’t know enough about trees to look at the roots or any of the signs that it could be an unhealthy tree. I spent the required amount of money and had the tree delivered right to my house.
With my tree at hand I started digging the hole to plant my tree. This was hard work and it took me almost the rest of the day. I did not realize what hard work digging a whole is. It’s easy to say that a hole will only take an hour or two, but once you actually start digging it usually progresses a lot slower than you would have estimated. I promise you, digging a hole is hard work! By the time I got the hole big enough to fit the ball of roots, I most definitely did not feel like digging another few feet around the perimeter as most tree planting guides suggest. I was ready to place the tree and no more. With the help of my neighbor, I lifted the tree across the yard and dropped it into my hole. Then I had to fill in the hole.
I can tell you I was very happy when that job was done, I was exhausted! I stood back to admire my work. That was when my 3 year old daughter said something that crushed my spirits, and haunts me to this day. ”Daddy, that tree stands up like grandpa!“ My father is a great man, and if she had compared any other aspect of the tree to him I would have considered it an honor. But unfortunately his back has been deteriorating lately, and he can’t stand up very straight. I noticed that my tree did indeed have a similarity to his posture.
Not knowing any better, I hoped it was something the tree will outgrow in time, I decided to leave it for a while to see what happens. I faithfully watched the progress of my tree every day and hoped to see that it was growing straighter; that it at least looks a little straighter than it did the day before. Daily my spirits crushed when I saw that it had not improved at all. I really did not have the energy to remove it again and I finally simply left it there. I never went over to that side of the house again and almost completely pushed the tree from my mind. I went as far as deciding that if any problem ever came from me simply leaving the tree there, I will simply pack up my furniture and flee the country. You can imagine what a humiliating experience that was for me!
For three years I completely ignored the existence of that tree until one day when I was sitting in my house and I heard a loud crash. I ran outside to see what the problem was, just to see that my tree had grown to such an unmanageable size that it had taken out my gutter and part of my neighbor’s fence. This was when I really considered leaving the country as I promised myself earlier!
