Organic Gardening – The Principles Of Organic Gardening
Let us look at the reasons why organic gardening is a good idea and why you may want to start organic gardening:
- You may want to start a garden without having a negative impact on the environment.
- It is possible that you may want to change your garden for the better, while still producing fruit and vegetables for the family.
- You may also want to improve the nutritional value of the fruit and vegetables you produce in your garden.
- It is also possible that you feel you want to make use of your households’ organic matter that you are throwing away at the moment, such as vegetable peels.
The main goal of your organic garden is to produce as much as possible while using as little outside resources as possible. According to organic principles, this means that you should not use any artificial fertilizers or pesticides. It’s even better if you can avoid using water from your hose by gathering rain water. The idea is that you should try to use your resources as best you can to create a healthy crop. It’s a big challenge but it’s worth the extra trouble in the end.
Here are a few pointers for you
1. Your compost heap:
Instead of throwing away vegetables and other food waste matter such as vegetable peels, you should start a compost heap. This is, by far, the best way of making your own fertilizer for your garden. You will find that there is a lot of material to add to your compost heap. When you mow the lawn, put all of the clipped grass into the heap. Put all of your food waste into the pile. Once it’s hot and ready, you can spread it on your garden and watch the plants flourish. Plants fed naturally produce the fruit and vegetables with all the nutrients we need. This is more than can be said of fruit and vegetables grown with artificial fertilizers. For more ideas on how to make good compost I recommend an e-book such as ”The Worlds Best Compost“
2. Chickens roaming your garden:
If it is possible where you have your garden, you can even have chickens roaming your garden. Chickens are surprisingly easy to sustain. They spread helpful manure for you, and you will probably never have to buy chicken feed. To further enhance your garden’s nutrients you can make sure that there are plenty of earth worms in the soil.
3. Maggot bins:
People use ”maggot“ bins to get maggots for their garden but I’m not convinced of the wise ness of this in towns and cities. Even on farms you’ll have to make very sure your bins are far from the house and in a very secure place to prevent disease. I’ve found, for the average garden, that you can get along just fine with a good compost heap. With a compost heap made with the help you get in a book such as "The Worlds Best Compost."
With these systems in place you ensure that almost none of your leftovers are wasted. You have to teach yourself to think of saving all of the nutrients you can, and converting them into energy that your garden can use to grow healthy, delicious fruit and vegetables. It is by far the cheapest way of maintaining a fruit and vegetable garden and it is by far the best for the environment as it creates better and more natural products.
Organic gardening can be very rewarding. Once you get going with all the different ways you can produce ”organic“ fertilizers for your gardening you will never have to bother with any artificial fertilizers again and so do your bit for a ”greener“ planet. Your compost heap is going to turn into your most trusted gardening "ally!"
