Before you decide on a tree and where to plant it make sure of the best spot where there is enough space and where there is enough sunlight for your tree. After deciding what tree you want to plant and where you want to plant it, you can get down to it. After buying your tree from the nursery you have to be very careful about getting it home. I had a friend who put the tree in the back of his truck and then unfortunately clipped a sign on the way home. His entire tree snapped in half, and my friend really felt very sad for his loss, tree does not come cheap!
1. Digging the hole and planting the tree:
When you have your tree safely back to your yard, have look at the bottom of your tree to the size of the clump of roots. Even though it may seem like a lot of work now, you have to dig a hole that is twice as wide as the clump, and just a little less deep. Making the hole slightly bigger than the clump of roots allows room for the soil that you dug out to be put back in, otherwise you’ll be stuck with a giant heap of dirt and with nowhere to put it. To ensure that your tree will grow well you need to line the hole with compost or fertilizer. After this you can put your tree into the hole, and spread the roots out evenly so that the tree will be strong and stable.
2. Filling up the hole after planting:
When you have your tree in the hole, take the soil that you dug up and fill in the hole completely. You should make sure that you use all of the dirt even is it is a couple inches higher than the rest of your yard because it will compress when you water your tree. Before you firm up the soil, make sure that the tree is completely vertical and will not fall over. After checking that the tree is perfectly vertical you can now gently firm up the soil around the tree.
3. Securing the tree upright:
If the tree's trunk is not yet completely sturdy and can be bent, you have to tie the tree to a stake with a bit of rope. Be sure not to tie the rope too tightly to the tree you have to allow room for the trunk to grow. Once the tree is sturdy enough to withstand all types of weather, you can take the stakes off of it. When all of this is done you should mulch around the base of the tree. If you live in an area where wildlife can access your yard, then you should put a fence around your tree, because some animals will eat the bark off of young trees and that will be the end of your tree.
4. The fruit bearing stage:
Once you have successfully planted your fruit tree the tree will start bearing fruit when it is three to five years old. Once your tree has a lot of fruit you should periodically pick some of the fruit so that the branches aren't weighed down too much. If the fruit gets too thick, the branches can break off. Do not be alarmed if your tree does not bear as much fruit in a certain year as in others as healthy trees often take a year now and again as ”vacation“ where they produce very little or no fruit.
5. The problem of pests:
After you've planted your tree you may have some problems with pests. To help keep these pests away, always make sure that you rake away old leaves, brush, or any other decaying matter that could be a brooding place for bugs that could be harmful to your tree.
6. Regular pruning:
It is vital for your tree’s health and sturdy growth that you prune your tree every spring. If you do not know how to do this ask advice at your nearest garden center. Water your tree every two weeks during dry times, and be sure not to hit your tree with a lawn mower or a weed eater because it could severely damage the growth process.
Remember that planting a tree is a long term investment and you should really take every care that you do it right. A little more hard work can save you many problems in future. A well cared for tree will be a source of pleasure for you and your family for very many years, do not skimp on your preparations!
