Gardening: The basics of vegetable gardening

Starting A vegetable Garden

If you love gardening, vegetable gardening is a very good option to consider. Vegetable gardening is very rewarding and there is nothing like fresh vegetables from your own garden. If you go as organic as possible with your vegetable garden, the vegetables will be more nutritious as well. So, as you can see there are many reasons why vegetable gardening has become so popular.

Vegetable gardening is no different than growing herbs or flowers and if the proper steps are taken and the plants are given the proper care they will flourish and produce very tasty vegetables.

Before you can start with your vegetable garden there are a few decisions you need to make and some preparations you need to make, they are:

1. Decide on the size and location

You must decide on the size of the vegetable garden you want and then you have to select the best place for it. It needs to be somewhere that has good drainage, good air flow, and good, deep soil.  It also has to get as much sunlight as possible.  Because vegetable gardens have such tasty rewards, many animals, such as dogs, rabbits, deer, and many others will try and get to your veggies.  One way to prevent this is to surround your garden with a fence, or put out a trap to catch mice, moles, and other animals.

2. Preparation of the soil: plowing

Proper soil preparation is vital for the success of your vegetable garden. Good soil for vegetable gardening can be achieved by cultivation and the application of organic materials. (Non-organic vegetable gardening is not recommended as it produces vegetables with inferior nutrition even though they may look very attractive.) The soil must be tilled (plowed) to control weeds and to mix mulch into the soil.  If you have a small garden, spading might be a better option than plowing; you may not even be able to get a plow into your garden!

3. Mulching

A vital part of soil preparation is mulching.  With mulching the organic matter added to the soil releases nitrogen, minerals, and other nutrients the plants need to thrive.  The most popular and best type of mulch you can use is compost.  While the kind and amount of fertilizer used depends on the soil and types of plants, there are some plants that have specific needs; leafy plants, like cabbage, spinach, and lettuce usually grow better with more nitrogen, while root crops like potatoes, beets, turnips, and carrots require more potash.  Tomatoes and beans use less fertilizer, while plants like onions, celery, and potatoes need a larger amount. Carefully read the instruction on your packets of seeds to ensure you know exactly how to prepare the soil for your vegetables.

4. Garden arrangement

The arrangement of you vegetable garden is vital for the success of your vegetable garden. There is no single plan that will work for every garden because of all the varying conditions.  One popular way to arrange a vegetable garden is to plant vegetables needing only limited space together, such as radishes, lettuce, beets, and spinach, and those that require more room together, such as corn, pumpkins, and potatoes.  Try and plant tall growing plants towards the back of the garden and shorter ones in the front so that their sunlight does not get blocked.

5. Your timing

All vegetables need to be planted at the right time of the year. So you have to keep that in mind when you want to start with your vegetables garden.

If you are dying to get an early start, you will have to start your garden inside in a hotbed and then transplant your seedlings when the weather permits.  After planting it is most important to make sure your vegetables receive the correct amount of water that, of course, depends on the type of plant.  Most plants will need the equivalent to about an inch of water per week.

6. Weeding

Weeds need to be controlled rigorously in vegetable gardening because they will take up water, light, and nutrients meant for the vegetables and they often bring diseases and insects to the garden.  You can get rid of weeds by cultivation or mulching.  To protect your precious vegetables against diseases and insects you can buy seeds that are disease resistant or use controlled chemicals. If you want to do organic gardening you’ll have to try and control these in a natural way. (See the article on organic gardening)

Vegetable gardening is so popular because you can actually taste and eat the fruit of all your labor. With proper care vegetable gardening need not be too expensive and the taste and nutrition of your vegetables will be far superior to those bought at a vegetable store or supermarket. If you take proper care of your plants you’ll have bumper craps and your gardening will be a pleasure. I highly recommend vegetable gardening for its therapeutic value as well. After a session in your vegetable garden you’ll feel like a new person, rid of all the daily stress.

Enjoy your vegetable gardening.
