Gardening: Choosing The Right Kind

Choosing the Perfect Garden for You

If you want to start a garden, the first thing you need to decide is the kind of garden that you are going to have. You have many choices and you may find it difficult to make a decision. The purpose of this article is to help you narrow down your options in order to help you make the right decision.

By narrowing it down, you'll make the gardening experience more fun and much easier on yourself. If all your plants are similar, then it shouldn't be very hard to care for them all.

Here are some of the main garden ideas for you to choose from.

1. What is the purpose of your garden?

If you only want something to make your garden look pretty, you'll most probably opt for a flower garden. For the sake of easy maintenance, flower gardens are usually filled with perennial flower. Perennial flowers are flowers which stay healthy year-round. They're basically weeds because of their hardiness but they look pretty and are mostly indigenous.

Different areas and climates have different flowers which are considered perennials. Ecologically indigenous plant are the best to plant in your garden as the plants are well suited and are not a threat to other plant in your vicinity. If you do a quick internet search for your area, you can probably find a list of flowers that will bring your flower garden to life. These usually only require work in the planting stage - after that, the flowers take care of themselves. The only downside to this is that you don't have any produce to show for it.

2. Another choice for your garden is to have a vegetable garden.

These usually require a little more work and research than a flower garden, but can be very rewarding. It does not matter what time of the year it is, you can usually find at least one vegetable that is still prospering. Your garden can supply you with vegetables almost year round and having fresh vegetables from the garden every day is ample reward for the extra work a vegetable garden requires. When starting a vegetable garden, you should build it keeping in mind that you will be adding more types of veggies later as the season goes. This will help your expandability. Once all your current crops are out of season, you won't be stuck with almost nowhere to put the new crops. A vegetable garden is ideal for someone who wants some produce, but doesn't want to devote every waking hour to perfecting their garden.

3. A Fruit garden:

One of the more difficult types of gardens to manage is a fruit garden. It's definitely the most high-maintenance and you should only attempt a fruit garden if you have lots of time to devote to gardening. When growing fruits, many pests are attracted by the sweetness and therefore there will be more pests around than in a flower garden. You do not only have to deal with just the right kind of soil and fertilizer, you also have to deal with choosing a pesticide that won't kill you when you eat the fruit. Your fruit garden will probably not produce year-round, as there is hardly any place where there are fruit in season all year round. The soil for your fruit garden needs to be just right for the plants to grow, and putting in another crop during its off-season could be disastrous to its growth process. If you're willing to put in a lot of work maintaining your garden, then a fruit garden may be a good choice for you. If at all possible you should really consider a fruit garden as it is very rewarding.

4. A mixed garden:

If you have the time, space and money a mixed garden is another option. By a mixed garden I mean a garden with an area for flowers a small vegetable garden and a few fruit trees. When you go for this option just make very sure you plan your garden properly not to run into problems later on. This kind of garden can give you the best of both worlds. Having the perennial flowers requires little work leaving you with more time to tend a small vegetable garden and a few fruit trees.

Now that I've outlined some of the main garden types that people can choose from, I hope you are able to make a good decision. Basically, the garden type comes down to what kind of produce you want, and how much work you want to put into your gardening. If you do not want a specific product and you want to do as little work as possible, go with a flower garden. If you want lots of delicious produce, and you are willing, and able, to spend hours in your garden each day, then go for a fruit garden. Just make very sure you are not getting yourself into something you can't handle!

Gardening has to be fun and if you take on more than you can handle, you'll spoil it for yourself. Be realistic, do not attempt too much, keep the available time and your energy levels in mind.
